La Bink

Last week our Parents as Teachers Parent Educator (whoah) came over for a visit. We discussed many things, but one thing in particular was Micah's language development. I'll save that whole story for another post, but one thing she mentioned was his beloved binky. Micah is a binky boy. Unfortunately, we've allowed him to have the binky whenever and wherever he wanted it.

Today, that's all a-changing. Over the weekend we talked to Micah about how we were going to start leaving binky in his room. I strongly believe in talking to kids about things and giving them fair warning. If we're going to leave the house in 10 minutes, I will tell him that we're going to leave the house in 10 minutes. That way, if he throws a fit about leaving, I can remind him that I told him we were leaving. Surprisingly, this works most of the time.

Anyway, the binky. So we had the convos and they usually ended with him saying, "NO," to the whole idea. But, we stayed the course (haha, sorry) and started with plan "Binky in Bedroom" this morning. At first, it was awful. I even cried a little (not in front of Micah) because he was so upset. But, after a good long talk with his dad, he willingly put his binky on his bed and came down for breakfast. He had to take a few breaks and go up to his room for "binky time," but he is doing amazingly well for the most part.

Truth be told, I'm impressed. As usual, Micah surprised me. Of course, it's only mid-afternoon on the first day, but still. Let a mama be proud for a minute. :)

  2. I should probably do this with the Coco doll....but it makes me kinda sad just thinking about it

  3. No! Let her keep Coco! Our parent educator said the blankie was more than fine - good even. Coco is the same kind of thing!

  4. YAY! Just found your blog yesterday...just in time for your "blog a day" project :) My husband and I just sent our initial application to CHI last week and are hoping to adopt from Ethiopia, too! Glad I found your blog :)

  5. Tiny's Mom I don't think you should take away the doll. There are lots of good reasons to leave a bink in the dust, (teeth, speech, etc.) but a doll doesn't hamper anything. I have one child who really needs her taggie and she is 6. We have told her to leave it in her bed so that it is easy to find. We refuse to tear apart the entire house at bedtime to find it. One night without it and she decided that taggie should stay in her bed.

Sorry to get off course there. ;) I think this is great Stacie. :) He will get used to it. It is a hard transistion but once you see how he blossoms you will thank yourself for the hard days you put in.

Love that he goes and has bink time. Mimi was my one who was most attached to hers and she would go sit on the edge of her bed and suck for a bit. It was so cute. :)

  6. Stacie,
We are on week 2 of no binky at all. Yikes! I won't say it was easy, but we are finally getting some sleep. We are doing our best to promote the favorite blankie as a substitute. It's never an easy transition, but you'll do great!

  7. Yay Micah! Way to go! Silas started to get sick today... the paci and blankie came out of the room. I mean after all sickness is a pretty good reason to break the in the crib rule. :)

  8. Great job Micah!! This is what we did with both of our binky addicted girls and it worked great. They did spend LOTS of time in their beds with binky that first week but in the end they were binky free after awhile.

  10. Giving up the binky is rough! It sounds like he's doing well though. Not sure if you want it or not, but this is how we got our Maya to give up her binky for good. This Easter (she was 3.5 years old), we told her that the Easter bunny collects little kids binkies when he leaves their easter basket so that he can then go and give the binkies to the babies that need them. In return he'll leave an extra special binkie gift. Because she was over 3, she got it and although was sad for a day about not having her binky to sleep with, we would just remind her that the babies were needing them and she would be happy about it. So since Easter we've not had a soother in the house and it really wasn't as horrible of a change as I thought it was going to be.
