Woo-Woo!

So, I may have mentioned before that we are a family of obsessions. When we like something we REALLY like it.

Ahem... Where was I? Oh, right. Obsessions. So, Micah's latest obsession is the Woo-woo, or what is commonly called a train. (He is also obsessed with sounds, but I'll save that for another post.) We rode the train a couple of months back at the zoo and now he is all about the trains...

We have to ride the train almost immediately upon arriving at the zoo these days, and if we don't - that is all he will talk about until we do. "Mom, woo-woo?"

So, lately we have been satisfying both of our passions by going to Barnes and Noble. We've actually been going since he was a wee babe, but now that he has discovered the train table, it is a brand new, magical place. I grab a book I'm thinking about getting, sit myself on a chair next to the table and he plays for minutes at a time! It is magical.

But, I have to be honest about something. I cannot look those tiny wooden trains in their tiny wooden faces. Why? They are Thomas trains. I have always had an unnatural fear of Thomas the Train and all his cronies... I mean... his friends. I think it is their faces...

I know he is smiling. And I know he's probably a very nice train with a face, but it CREEPS ME OUT. He's just creepy. It's so bad that I've tried to steer Micah away from the Thomas the Train books and toys. I can't imagine reading one of these books to him every night (as I'm sure it would be requested every night).

So, for you mamas who have embraced Thomas, I say, right on! You are brave. I'm still just a little too scared to bring home trains with faces. Of course, Micah usually wins out in these things, so it could be just a matter of time....

  1. Good luck mommy! I thought Thomas was a two year old phase and here we are with an almost five year old who STILL is obsessed. But think of it this way, it could be way worse!

  3. I agree he is a little (ahem A LOT) creepy!! Mamush is really into trains, too. He just was looking at a Thomas book tonight - he dug it out, for I hid it last night! I have a feeling we are both gonna be dealin' with Thomas for a long time.

As for trains, I think you should take Micah on the AMTRAK to lovely Springfield, IL :)

  4. Have you ever seen Jay Jay the Jet Plane. He and his pals are super duper creepy to me. My first daughters loved him and they had only one book and it was one of their favorites.

Mr. Paul is totally into choo choos as well, so much that his sisters have taken to calling him choo choo boy. He really is obsessed. He has several Thomas things and adores them. I don't see his obsession waning any time soon. I hope you have better luck with Micah.

  6. Hold out as long as you can!!! And then shop like a maniac on ebay for loads of used Thomas stuff. Ernie's obsession lasted from 2 years to 4 1/2. Now everything is dinosaurs. ROAR!

  8. Stacie you are SO right. They are creepy. They're in the same category as clowns for me. Gives me shivers just thinking about it. We bought Liam a little wooden train set at IKEA. It was about $20 total and very cute. We didn't want to spend a fortune not knowing if he'd even play with it. He liked it for a while and then, not so much. We were glad we didn't spend the money for Thomas stuff for a couple reasons: wasted money and the creep factor. It might be a good set for Micah to see if he enjoys it before shelling out the dough.

  10. We are in a huge train phase here, too. We play with our Brio trains Every. Single. Day. Can't hide them either. I've tried!!

  11. Thomas has some kind of addictive chemical that only works on littlies wiht a Y chromosome. It's weird, but I figure it's just chemical - no way of talking their brains out of it!

One thing that decreases the creep factor for me (and at the moment, I'll admit I only have to deal with the obsessions of nephews) is that the narrator is Ringo Starr from the Beatles!! You probably already knew that, but... I can listen for a lot longer, knowing that :)

  12. funny.... funny... Silas isn't in to Thomas either and I am not pushing it. Though, we also have recently discovered the train table at Barnes... Silas is good for a little bit and then he gets distracted by all the new toys surrounding the train table. :)

  13. Boomer is completely obsessed. I have to beg him to read anything else. I recently bought a big thomas set at a garage sale and divided it into parts and am making him earn it, one part at a time :) He is working on getting the 'big big bridge' right now.
